The gymnasts form the core of the whole show. They must be able to perform a variety of gymnastic movements, which range from free-exercise and other simple movements performed using flags, torches and other equipment, to difficult callisthenics performed using hoops, balls, skipping ropes and clubs. There is little space for individual virtuosity – the emphasis is on group synchronicity and the adeptness of the collective in creating representational formation patterns such as huge 'grids', that reach across the whole field, as well as smaller forms like flower baskets, the characters for 'peace', outlines of the Korean peninsula and the national flag of the Democratic People's republic of Korea. |
